The Stavrinakis Education Plan for South Carolina

Earlier today, Charleston County Council Chairman, and candidate for S.C. House District 119, Leon Stavrinakis, released the Stavrinakis Education Plan for South Carolina which calls on a state mandate for each school district to spend 65% of their education budget towards “inside the classroom.”

“For too long the issue put to taxpayers has been how much money is needed for education; my proposal calls on getting more education for our money.”

Currently the average of the State of South Carolina’s school districts spends only 59.7% of their operational budgets towards “inside the classroom,” ranking S.C. 35th in the nation on “in classroom” spending.

“The most important part of education are the children, the people who impact the children the most are the teachers, and this occurs inside the classroom, therefore it only makes sense to direct more of our education dollars into the classroom where it will most benefit students and teachers.”

An increase of 5.3% (65% of the operational budget) would allow South Carolina’s K-12 public schools to have an additional $264 million per year for students, teachers and classrooms across the state without raising taxes.

The day was spent talking about the Stavrinakis Education Plan alongside Tim Mooney, the National Director of First Class Education, who was in town to support the Stavrinakis Education Plan. “I want to thank Tim, along with the First Class Education organization, for being here today and supporting this plan; I look forward to taking my proposal to the statehouse in Columbia and getting it into law for the people of South Carolina.”

Ben Franklin said, “A penny saved is a penny earned.” For South Carolina’s K-12 education, five pennies saved is $264 million earned for the teachers and children across the state.

Announcement: $420 Million approved for the Mark Clark Expressway

After years of hard work by many, and countless hours by Chairman Stavrinakis, Charleston County will receive $420 Million to extend the Mark Clark Expressway.  The extension will free up many congested traffic areas west of the Ashley and will provide the thousands of residents with a more efficient evacuation route.  The Chairman’s response, “Without the help of House Speaker Bobby Harrell, Senator Glen McConnell, Mayor Joe Riley and many others, we could not have gotten this done and I want to thank all of those who made this happen.”
